    Some more:

    Bite the bullet

bite the bullet, idiom, words, Grammarly

Meaning: To accept something difficult or unpleasant

Origin: In the olden days, when doctors were short on anesthesia or time during a battle, they would ask the patient to bite down on a bullet to distract from the pain. The first recorded use of the phrase was in 1891 in The Light that Failed.

    Break the ice

Meaning: To break off a conflict or commence a friendship.

Origin: Back when road transportation was not developed, ships would be the only transportation and means of trade. At times, the ships would get stuck during the winter because of ice formation. The receiving country would send small ships to “break the ice” to clear a way for the trade ships. This gesture showed affiliation and understanding between two territories.

    Butter someone up

Meaning: To impress someone with flattery

Origin: This was a customary religious act in ancient India. The devout would throw butter balls at the statues of their gods to seek favor and forgiveness.

    Mad as a hatter

    Meaning: To be completely crazy

Origin: No, you didn’t already know this one, because it didn’t originate from Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland. Its origins date from the 17th and 18th centuries — well before Lewis Caroll’s book was published. In 17th century France, poisoning occurred among hat makers who used mercury for the hat felt. The “Mad Hatter Disease” was marked by shyness, irritability, and tremors that would make the person appear “mad.”

    Cat got your tongue?

Meaning: Asked to a person who is at loss of words

Origin: The English Navy used to use a whip called “Cat-o’-nine-tails” for flogging. The pain was so severe that it caused the victim to stay quiet for a long time. Another possible source could be from ancient Egypt, where liars’ and blasphemers’ tongues were cut out and fed to the cats. (What a treat for the cats!)

    Barking up the wrong tree

Meaning: To have misguided thoughts about an event or situation, a false lead

Origin: This refers to hunting dogs that may have chased their prey up a tree. The dogs bark, assuming that the prey is still in the tree, when the prey is no longer there.

    Turn a blind eye

Meaning: To ignore situations, facts, or reality

Origin: The British Naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, had one blind eye. Once when the British forces signaled for him to stop attacking a fleet of Danish ships, he held up a telescope to his blind eye and said, “I do not see the signal.” He attacked, nevertheless, and was victorious.

    Bury the hatchet

Meaning: To stop a conflict and make peace

Origins: This one dates back to the early times North America when the Puritans were in conflict with the Native Americans. When negotiating peace, the Native Americans would bury all their hatchets, knives, clubs, and tomahawks. Weapons literally were buried and made inaccessible.

    Caught red-handed

Meaning: To be caught in the act of doing something wrong

Origin: This originates from an old English law that ordered any person to be punished for butchering an animal that wasn’t his own. The only way the person could be convicted is if he was caught with the animal’s blood still on his hands.

    Give a cold shoulder

Meaning: Being unwelcoming or antisocial toward someone

Origin: In medieval England, it was customary to give a guest a cold piece of meat from the shoulder of mutton, pork, or beef chop when the host felt it was time for the guest to leave. This was a polite way to communicate, “You may leave, now.”

    Go the whole nine yards

Meaning: To try your best at something

Origin: During World War II, the fighter pilots were equipped with nine yards of ammunition. When they ran out, it meant that they had tried their best at fighting off the target with the entirety of their ammunition.

    Let one’s hair down

Meaning: To relax or be at ease

Origin: In public, the aristocratic women of medieval times were obliged to appear in elegant hair-dos that were usually pulled up. The only time they would “let their hair down” was when they came home and relaxed.

    Rub the wrong way

Meaning: To bother or annoy someone

Origin: Early Americans, during the colonial times, would ask their servants to rub their oak floorboards “the right way”. The wrong way (not wiping them with dry fabric after wet fabric) would cause streaks to form and ruin it, leaving the homeowner annoyed. Alternatively, it could have derived from rubbing a cat’s fur the “wrong way,” which annoys them.

    Thanks guys,

Some of these I already knew but a lot I didn't. Language is an interesting thing. Knowing the real meaning of words is one of the reason I'm so offended by many curse words!

I wonder if people who know many languages or musicians who have learned many instruments would be any better at the bicycle challenge.

I watch this guy too Wendy,I like his videos. This is a perfect example of rewiring your neural network. Imagine if the first bike he gave his son was the backwards bike, he probably would have picked it up even quicker, just like his first bike. I think kids still have a lot more room upstairs, and not as much unwiring to be done to learn something new. Remember the woman scientist in "what the bleep" who, along with her husband proved that the neural network could be changed? Before that, it was believed,by western medicine anyways, that the neural network, once damaged, couldn't be repaired! That discovery was so important, but got little attention. This was a great way to demonstrate it,,,Thanks

Thanks for your comments Tscout. It just showed me how utterly vulnerable we are to thinking in one particular way - no wonder we all have such a hard time getting along. I can imagine his moment for "getting" the bike was like when you stair at one of those hidden images in the dot patterns - looking and looking and swearing there's nothing there until suddenly the picture snaps into focus and then it's impossible to look at the same pattern and not see the image.

The following is FDR's speech at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on September 23rd, 1932.  Reading it helped me to really see just how far we have gotten away from the greatness of America concerning the selfless ideal of working and growing business, economy and government for the good of the people, of the commonwealth.  Donald Trump branded the phrase, Make America Great Again.  He should read what FDR said and have himself a personal epiphany for his sake and the sake of us all, the commonwealth, the people.  (and so should Hillary, and every self-serving poli

Lots of his speeches are available on Youtube but I couldn't find this one. What was interesting to me was how much he sounded like JFK - it made me realize how much JFK must have borrowed from him in his speeches. This is the one I started to listen to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nSgMWW-808

Great post. It's not just about sex but it's about everywhere and everything. The job / office environment - it's the reason women get paid less for doing the same job from my perspective, It's about time we've had the return of the "gentle" man!

Whatever force brought those kids together definitely had this in mind, they are just so tight. And there's only a few real bass vocalists out there,,Avi is one of them. I was downloading their videos and playing them for the kids in China,,,they were in awe, and begged for them every day. Of course they are the same kids that begged for Minecraft parodies too!

If you didn't follow Kristyne's link on the other post, Cohen explained that the song was written as a sort of recognition, or acceptance, of a "less than perfect" world,, which I guess is like saying,,,"All is as it should be",,or,,"All is well",,,, kind of fitting for the Gspot. Thanks for the Official version B, the video's a little better than the lyrics version on the other post

This is one of the best renditions of "Halleluja" that I've heard. A great song, a great group. Thanks, Bodhi.

In keeping with the season, here's their performance of "Mary, Did You Know?":

thanks Noa,,I love his stuff! (except for the computer voices,ha! They are starting to get to me). To me, it is the same thing as saying, "if we start to serve others, our vibrational level rises, and the timeline changes, individually,or collectively. I guess that, visualizing it this way will help many who don't understand it, or, find it hard to act on, when put in other words.Cool

Planet 9 Explained and Explored with Astronomer Konstantin Batygin - YouTube

That planet sounds pretty cool,,,,like,,,really cool,,ice, rock, and gas! Of course, no one has seen it yet, and it has nothing to do with planet x, it is only affecting some asteroids in the Keiper belt. And that leaves 3 more to be found according to the Sumerians , and the South American astronomers of old. That glitch in the mass of Uranus,,or Neptune would explain why no one found something there. Then again, the probe they sent out in the 80's reportedly found and photographed that red monster everyone talks about, and that's when it became "illegal" to talk about Planet X. It was an open conversation up to that point. I also found it odd that they never even mentioned using Hubble to search,as Hubble has seen way farther than they are talking about looking here, it seems the obvious thing to do. They have invited all astronomers to search that big patch of sky. Hey everybody,,,look over here!

It only just came home to me -- and to internet news people like Alex Jones -- that this has probably happened.  I'm surprised how deeply it has affected me -- because of the respect I have for Assange and people like him (Snowden, Manning, Ellsberg, Edmonds, to name a few...)  We owe them a lot.  Let's hope he's hiding out somewhere.  As you will see, the facts are anything but clear.

Hi Bob,,,I saw this yesterday morning as well,,the mention of the guys storming the embassy was pretty unnerving, but no one seemed sure if it happened! Don't those places have a secret way out? Or a secret wall that opens or something? Ha! I hope he is just hiding out too! There is another story out about him being granted amnesty,,,I hope that one's true!

those were really funny Gary! I was just thinking how Hollywood really supported Clinton, and how both Wash. DC and Hollywood are the two places waist deep in pizzagate right now! Of course, pizzagate is quickly proving to be an international affair, but here in the US, that's where all the power and longtime history of pedophilia thrives. It's like this underlying link between a lot of powerful people that had them so sure that they would prevail. Is it possible that Trump actually won when he wasn't supposed to? I'm still up in the air about it! And,,,I'm burned out on all the post election small talk and speculation about what and if he will do anything effective,,,it's all just talk now! But it was really fun to watch all the experts stick their foot in their mouths,,,thanks
