Crystalline Peace

Hi Everyone,

What is it about these crystal bowls? I swear, even posted on the internet, there's something special about this sound. I've been around music all my life and heard plenty of close up performances on all kinds of musical instruments but only the music from these bowls seems to penetrate your being and change things like the same notes (frequencies) would coming from another more ordinary instrument.

I have an idea why. There was an interesting short interview with a man on one of that 6 part series on sacred knowledge,,,the episode about the number 9. The man was talking about the old pipe organs, which led to him talking about how the music scale was changed, which changed all music. The change offset all the frequencies produced in music as we know it, thus changing the effect. I'm sorry I can't search that episode right now,,but I am about to get on a plane to go overseas again. Apparently ,only a few old pipe organs still produce the old frequencies. Then there are the crystal bowls, which can't be altered in this way. The deep sounds of the chanting buddist monks also penetrate the body, that is what they are for,,,you should try those too, they will go right through you! That segment features coral castle,,,where I was lucky enough to visit this summer,,,the number 9, and leads to the interview with this guy,,,I think it is Eric Dollard..His stories about the pipe organ concerts in san francisco are great.....It is all based on sacred geometry,,,so,,,changing the numbers just a fraction effected the whole music scale as we know it....Was it done deliberately? I don't know,,,but it made sense....Gotta go,,,,I hope you find it...L,,,,T

Thanks Tod,

Yea, I've seen a lot of that. I think the pipe organs have actually gone through a few tunings changes over the years because even our church organ that was built around 1900's is tuned differently than most instruments are today. I'm on the music committee and trying to make the case that we should stick to the old tuning but I can feel that battle is gonna get lost already. I'm not thoroughly convinced it's just the tuning though. I think perhaps the bowls just vibrate over a larger surface or maybe it is the crystals. - I know pipe organs are large too but one typically can't get right up close to them. People say they feel the pipe organs too but I've only noticed a difference with the bowls. And string instruments (violin, cello, viola) can play any note at all with no frets so theoretically they could play the same frequencies - old tuning or new tuning but I've been around these instruments all my life and never felt them like the bowls.

At one time, I was fortunate enough to attend a crystal bowl healing session every week.  Once, I even hallucinated during a healing.  Each bowl was tuned to a different chakra and was played individually in turn from root to crown.  The lady who played was not nearly as gifted as Ashana.  Often, I could hear a harsh and sudden strike against the bowl as the stick initially made contact; and this was sometimes followed by a gritty sound as the stick circled the bowl.  If you've ever heard another bowl player, you probably know what I mean.  Ashana uses a different type of bowl than I've seen before, but I think she could play singing bowls made of any material and produce an exceptional sound.

Ashana has a real gift.  She expertly harmonizes more than one bowl at a time.  Her contact with the bowls is soft and intuitive, even lifting the stick above the bowl to carry the sound upward.  At minute 3:25 she draws the stick horizontally in the air above the bowl, which stops the sound.  I've never seen that done before and didn't know that that was possible.  Very cool.

I was told that the sound of crystal bowls can be felt from 2 miles away.  I'm not sure why people can be similarly affected by a recording of these sounds.  Interesting.

The following words come from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3ASinging_bowl

Crystal bowls are so powerful as they combine several healing modalities; sound healing, crystal healing and healing through light and colour. These properties can be further enhanced by the power of focused intention. Sound healing works on the principle that everything in our universe is energy which has a vibration. Everything in existence within the universe is in a vibrational state. The frequency at which we normally vibrate is called resonance. Certain sounds therefore will resonate with different organs and parts of the body. Sound has been scientifically proven to have an effect on our autonomic, immune & endocrine systems as well as the neuropeptide transmitters in our brain.

Sound healing practitioners’ look at their clients from this perspective and seek to balance their clients ‘dis-ease’ through correction of vibrational imbalances in their energetic system i.e. their aura or electromagnetic blueprint. When an organ in the body is not functioning at its optimum its sound pattern will be off, yet by re introducing the correct sound pattern this will help it to heal and return to health through the law of resonance. This law states that when one energetic system encounters another, similar system, their vibrations must come into a state of resonance or harmonic vibration. It has also been documented how sound can effect matter. 80% of our bodies are water and the effect that sound has on water has been photographically demonstrated in Dr Masaru Emoto’s book `The Hidden Messages in Water’. Different sounds produced different types of geometric shapes within frozen water. Playing ‘Mozart’ produced beautiful symmetrical snowflake like crystals whilst discordant sound had no clear structure. You can imagine then the power of sound on the Water within our bodies!

Dr Hans Jenny demonstrated how matter responds to sound using Cymatics. Cymatics is the use of ‘Pure Tone’ or ‘sine waves’ within the audible spectrum to produce physical patterns on a medium such as liquid or sand. A good example of this is how the ‘Shri Yantra’ pattern is produced by the ‘Aum’ sound.

Crystal bowls are unique in sound healing as they produce ‘pure tones’ when played. When we produce a sound with our voices or other instruments the note waivers and varies. With crystal singing bowls the note does not waiver. This produces a wave of energy known as a ‘sine’ wave that spreads out for a kilometre from the bowl in all directions and lasts for several minutes.

Sine waves appear in nature in ocean waves and light waves. At higher frequencies sound converts into colour which is within the spectrum of light. Sine waves have the same energetic pattern that occurs in our brain in alpha state. In the alpha brain wave state the brainwaves run at about 8 to 12 cycles per seconds or hertz. This is a calm meditative state where the person is still alert and the is more receptive to learning, focusing and suggestion.

Crystal healing also works with vibration. Scientifically Quartz crystals have been shown to have high piezoelectric & pyroelectric properties. The piezoelectric effect is produced when a quartz crystal is compressed, which causes it to release a voltage of electricity and sometimes light. With Crystal bowls this compression of the crystalline structure occurs when the bowl is played.

Pyroelectricy is caused by variation in temperature of the crystal and causes the energy within the crystal to expand when heated and contract upon cooling. This cooling would then store the energy within the crystalline structure. In my experience the crystal bowl ‘warms up’ when played. Even very small changes in temperature have been shown to produce this pyroelectric effect. Quartz crystals have the ability to take in energy, store it, redirect it and amplify it. Quartz absorbs white light and therefore has every colour frequency within it. Our bodies also contain silica and some of our glands are said to oscillate like crystals. Glands like the pineal gland are even crystalline in shape and structure as are cells right down to the molecular level. So quartz crystals will resonate with these structures.

The bowls that have other gemstones fused with them will also have the metaphysical properties of that stone. Colour plays a part in this as does the individual mineral content of the stone. For example the gemstone turquoise is good for helping with joint pain and problems such as arthritis. Turquoise is a mineral rich in copper; copper bracelets have been used for centuries to bring sufferers relief from these ailments, so the stone will thus have a similar effect.

Crystal bowls work as a synergy between all of the above mentioned modalities. As quartz has the ability to take in energy and vibration and as our thoughts are waves of energy or vibration the bowls will absorb these ‘thought vibrations’ and amplify them. Carlos Castaneda said there's an immeasurable, indescribable force which shamans called "intent" and absolutely everything that exists in the entire cosmos is connected to it. When we focus our thoughts with laser like clarity and precision we are connecting to the vibration of that which we seek to manifest. Quartz bowls will hone our thoughts and make them clearer. Through the law of attraction these clear thoughts then magnetize those things to us.

The film ‘The Secret’ clearly documents how and why positive, clear thought brings those things that we focus on into being. It also demonstrates how we create our reality by our thoughts and the vibration that they and we as individuals hold. Positive thought has been shown to produce positive changes in out physiology. Therefore the more we ‘intend’ and believe the crystal singing bowls will effect those and others the more they will."

I'm puzzled by the information you shared about the 9-note scale.  I was a music major and studied the origins of music from Gregorian Chant forward and I know of no such scale.  (Of course, history isn't always taught accurately.)

But what puzzles me is that if you hum the 8 tone octave, it sounds complete.  For example, in the key of C, you start at C and finish at the C an octave higher.  Although there are an additional 5 half notes available within the major scale (ionian mode) it wouldn't sound right to squeeze a 9th note in.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musical_scales_and_modes for other scales.

On the other hand,  http://academic.udayton.edu/PhillipMagnuson/soundpatterns/scales/ says:

Strictly speaking, 9-note scales do not exist. However, it is possible to consider the MELODIC MINOR scale as a 9-pitch collection:

So, it's still possible to play the melodic minor today, though chording on an organ might be tricky.

I watched the episode you're talking about, Todd, but I don't remember the 9 reference in the organ scene.  I'll see if I can find it and watch it again.

Okay, I get it now.  By "coincidence" Wendy turned me onto Dr. Len Horowitz this week and he talks about the 9-note Solfeggio Frequencies.  http://www.miraclesandinspiration.com/solfeggiofrequencies.html So rather than being a 9-note musical scale, as some people call it, it's a 9-note circle of tones.  The reason why these tones resonate so well with our bodies is that middle C falls at 528 hz, the God frequency or love / heart chakra tone.  By tuning the A of your instrument to 444 hz instead of the standard 440 hz, the music you play will then resonate with life itself.

Dr. Len says that tuned this way, instruments sometimes spontaneously vibrate in resonance with all that is and "play themselves."  Tomorrow, I'm tuning my guitar to 528.  This is cool.

Was just about to post the Solfeggio Frequencies, but you got to it.  I purchased a tuning fork set of the Solfeggio Frequences back in 2008.  They are great, but the crystal bowls are so much better for penetration of sound to mind/body/spirit/chakra...

that was what I couldn't remember in the airport...My reference to the 9's was just the episode that the interview was coupled with,,,evidently,,,those 4 points changed everything!

my experience with Crystal singing bowls goes like this. Many years ago while in meditation I got 'you resonate to the tone of G'- I shelved the thought and continued meditating then forgot about it.  A few times it flowed through my psyche again without me giving it much credence. Many years passed.  I lead many drum circles, worked with 'raising' my vibration, took some workshops with a guy that many consider to be very adept with Tibetan bowls but I had little knowledge of crystal bowls other than to have heard them a few times.

So a friend asked me to help her find a drum and I took her looking.  We walked into a little shop and there where 'walkabout' bowls in a display-I passed right by them and my friend asked 'what are these'.  The shopkeep said pick one up and showed her how to play it.  Still not really thinking much about it, I suddenly heard again-you resonate to the tone of G-and I asked her ' do you know what bowl is a G'.  She didn't but went to find out. I had picked up several bowls and didn't 'feel' much.  Then I picked up the 'G' and making it 'sing' I felt a rush of energy from my crown to my toes and back again.  So noticeably that I couldn't ignore it or discount it or rationalize it away. I have never felt such an immediate affinity for such a clear and simple sound.  I went home with that bowl.

Working with it even now many years later, I understand the message-I resonate to the tone of 'G'. But more than that, I've learned that G correlates to the throat chakra and each tone can assist in healing of a different chakra and area within. I needed an assist in that area (communication) at that time in my life. It's taken  many years for me to learn to communicate what exactly it is that 'I' need to communicate.  That particular singing bowl strengthened my communication skills at that time.  Others have helped me in other areas as I have grown and changed.

I've learned that there is so much to sound healing, and that it can be a tremendous tool for growth-and just how 'vibrational' we  are by our very nature...so ohm, sing, chant, drum, find what it is you 'resonate' with and to and do it. Chanting in the car at the top of my lungs is a great stress reliever and if you look crazy enough it keeps the crazies away..lmao.        Aaaaummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Got a chuckle out of that Onesong. I like to sing opera at the top of my lungs in the car. I like to sing along with Andre Bocelli.
