According to the Global Peace Index (GPI), Iceland has been the most peaceful country in the world for three years running. (Hmmn, is it any coincidence that they're the only country of note to oust the central banks?)
These findings our based upon indicators such as:
Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict
- Number of external and internal conflicts fought
- Number of deaths from organised conflict (external)
- Number of deaths from organised conflict (internal)
- Level of organised conflict
- Relations with neighbouring countries
Societal Safety and Security
- Level of perceived criminality in society
- Number of refugees and displaced people as a percentage of the total population
- Political instability
- Political Terror Scale
- Terrorist activity
- Number of homicides per 100,000 people
- Level of violent crime
- Likelihood of violent demonstrations
- Number of jailed population per 100,000 people
- Number of internal security officers and police per 100,000 people
Militarisation
- Military expenditure as a percentage of GDP
- Number of armed-service personnel per 100,000 people
- Volume of transfers of major conventional weapons as recipients (import) per 100,000 people
- Volume of transfers of major conventional weapons as supplier (export) per 100,000 people
- Financial contribution to UN peacekeeping missions
- Nuclear and heavy weapons capability
- Ease of access to small arms and light weapons
Although these findings give us a rough idea of a country's "peace quotient" one has to wonder at some of the figures. For example, Canada ranks 8 even though it has obliterated its own indigenous people. Likewise, Australia ranks 16 even though they have been actively committing genocide for decades against the native Australians (aka Aboriginals), the oldest indigenous people in the world.
Paradoxically, Indonesia, the country that mercilessly slaughtered their neighbors -- the indigenous East Timorese -- ranks 54, but Papua New Guinea (formerly Timor) rates a paltry 99. Incidentally, that's the same rating the GPI gives the United States -- What?!
Dig around the Middle East and you'll find some other anomalies.
