Protesters march past Federal Hall on Wall Street on Monday. The Occupy Wall Street protest is in its second week in New York City as demonstrators speak out against corporate greed and social inequality.

By Chris Hedges

There are no excuses left. Either you join the revolt taking place on Wall Street and in the financial districts of other cities across the country or you stand on the wrong side of history. Either you obstruct, in the only form left to us, which is civil disobedience, the plundering by the criminal class on Wall Street and accelerated destruction of the ecosystem that sustains the human species, or become the passive enabler of a monstrous evil. Either you taste, feel and smell the intoxication of freedom and revolt or sink into the miasma of despair and apathy. Either you are a rebel or a slave.

To be declared innocent in a country where the rule of law means nothing, where we have undergone a corporate coup, where the poor and working men and women are reduced to joblessness and hunger, where war, financial speculation and internal surveillance are the only real business of the state, where even habeas corpus no longer exists, where you, as a citizen, are nothing more than a commodity to corporate systems of power, one to be used and discarded, is to be complicit in this radical evil. To stand on the sidelines and say “I am innocent” is to bear the mark of Cain; it is to do nothing to reach out and help the weak, the oppressed and the suffering, to save the planet. To be innocent in times like these is to be a criminal. Ask Tim DeChristopher

Choose. But choose fast. The state and corporate forces are determined to crush this. They are not going to wait for you. They are terrified this will spread. They have their long phalanxes of police on motorcycles, their rows of white paddy wagons, their foot soldiers hunting for you on the streets with pepper spray and orange plastic nets. They have their metal barricades set up on every single street leading into the New York financial district, where the mandarins in Brooks Brothers suits use your money, money they stole from you, to gamble and speculate and gorge themselves while one in four children outside those barricades depend on food stamps to eat. Speculation in the 17th century was a crime. Speculators were hanged. Today they run the state and the financial markets. They disseminate the lies that pollute our airwaves. They know, even better than you, how pervasive the corruption and theft have become, how gamed the system is against you, how corporations have cemented into place a thin oligarchic class and an obsequious cadre of politicians, judges and journalists who live in their little gated Versailles while 6 million Americans are thrown out of their homes, a number soon to rise to 10 million, where a million people a year go bankrupt because they cannot pay their medical bills and 45,000 die from lack of proper care, where real joblessness is spiraling to over 20 percent, where the citizens, including students, spend lives toiling in debt peonage, working dead-end jobs, when they have jobs, a world devoid of hope, a world of masters and serfs.

The only word these corporations know is more. They are disemboweling every last social service program funded by the taxpayers, from education to Social Security, because they want that money themselves. Let the sick die. Let the poor go hungry. Let families be tossed in the street. Let the unemployed rot. Let children in the inner city or rural wastelands learn nothing and live in misery and fear. Let the students finish school with no jobs and no prospects of jobs. Let the prison system, the largest in the industrial world, expand to swallow up all potential dissenters. Let torture continue. Let teachers, police, firefighters, postal employees and social workers join the ranks of the unemployed. Let the roads, bridges, dams, levees, power grids, rail lines, subways, bus services, schools and libraries crumble or close. Let the rising temperatures of the planet, the freak weather patterns, the hurricanes, the droughts, the flooding, the tornadoes, the melting polar ice caps, the poisoned water systems, the polluted air increase until the species dies.

Who the hell cares? If the stocks of ExxonMobil or the coal industry or Goldman Sachs are high, life is good. Profit. Profit. Profit. That is what they chant behind those metal barricades. They have their fangs deep into your necks. If you do not shake them off very, very soon they will kill you. And they will kill the ecosystem, dooming your children and your children’s children. They are too stupid and too blind to see that they will perish with the rest of us. So either you rise up and supplant them, either you dismantle the corporate state, for a world of sanity, a world where we no longer kneel before the absurd idea that the demands of financial markets should govern human behavior, or we are frog-marched toward self-annihilation.

Those on the streets around Wall Street are the physical embodiment of hope. They know that hope has a cost, that it is not easy or comfortable, that it requires self-sacrifice and discomfort and finally faith. They sleep on concrete every night. Their clothes are soiled. They have eaten more bagels and peanut butter than they ever thought possible. They have tasted fear, been beaten, gone to jail, been blinded by pepper spray, cried, hugged each other, laughed, sung, talked too long in general assemblies, seen their chants drift upward to the office towers above them, wondered if it is worth it, if anyone cares, if they will win. But as long as they remain steadfast they point the way out of the corporate labyrinth. This is what it means to be alive. They are the best among us.

The Truthdig columnist sits in with protesters and says the power elite are “very, very frightened,” adding, “They do not want movements like this to grow.”

I want to be a part of this! But where in Massachusetts can I go to make my stand? Anyone know of anywhere I can go? New York is not very far away from me at all, but it's a hike and a half cuz I don't yet have a vehicle...any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hi, Linney.

If you have a Facebook account, you can look at OccupyTogether's page to find a place nearest you where protests are happening.  I believe there is an active group in Boston (the financial district).  I'm not sure about other cities in MA.  I have also heard that people are gathering in front of local branches of Bank of America and the other large banks to protest at a local level.

I'd also like to be part of this movement, but am honestly afraid to get arrested given that I have a young son to care for... I've never been arrested and don't know how long they detain someone in these cases.  So... I'm also looking for a way to show my support, and "be there" with the NYC team.  If anyone thinks of ways to show support, please let me know.

Lots of love and light,

Kathy

Peaceful noncompliance.  detach from systems and corporations we do not wish to support.  Max has the right idea, simple and effective if enough disengage and stop sending their energy, including the energy of protest.  It's what they expect.  What they do not expect is noncompliance.

OWS Groups

Noa's picture

You don't need a facebook account to go to the Occupy Together website.  http://www.occupytogether.org/actions/  They used to list all the OWS groups, but now they have a map that points to groups on meetup.com -- not as user friendly.

If you keep clicking on the map, http://www.meetup.com/occupytogether/?see_all=1 it will zoom in enough that you can see which cities in Massachusetts are participating.  Don't get discouraged by the numbers listed in the group.  They don't mean anything.  OWS Boston is a huge, well-organized group, but lists only 2 members on meetup.com.  http://occupyboston.com/

I like Max Igan's advice but

I like Max Igan's advice but I feel that it may be worth attending a local protest if one goes with the spirit of education. In other words, make sure you show up with leaflets or cards to distribute to direct people to good information like www.wanttoknow.info. Signs to show passing cars may also be helpful if they are printed with large clear lettering and simple messages like "End the Fed" or "Watching TV=Being Programmed". I have to believe that some of the passersbys might get curious and decide to google the words on your sign.

Those most active in the protests may be the ones determining what organizational structures will replace the current corupt ones - hence the importance of helping them see beyond the fake left-right divide.

Clifford RULES!

Knowledge is Power

the other great thing about this interview is you get to hear Clifford's real life run in with the Canadian version of the IRS, the catalyst for all he has learned and utilized since then, as well as his reason for completely detaching from nearly all aspects of the current system, a level of non compliance that is very impressive to say the least...

Knowledge is Power

Noa's picture

It's true.  Listening to the words of Igan and Clifford is very liberating.  It's an immediate paradigm shift.

We're conditioned to believe that we need permission from the government to do anything, when the opposite is true.

When you have a basic understanding of trust law, you realize that the police have no jurisdiction to arrest or kettle people.  All government employees are public servants.  Governments are the trustees for the power we have given them and they are in breach of trust.

If people realized that we are the administrators, there would be no need to protest or beg for equity.  It's already our God given right as human beings, and the government knows this.  We just have to tell them we're claiming it.

The Power of Non-compliance

No reponsibility...

kevnkar's picture

...to anything or anyone is what these protestors have. The real 99% have obligations to family and the evil creditors which require them to go to work every day and earn a living. This kind of behavior is exactly what the PTB want so it will escalate and they can emplement their martial law and mass arrest plans. This is exactly what the NDAA is about. This is not what a Jeffersonian revolution is about. Good intentions pave the road to hell and this is not the way. Use the vote and vote for lightworkers. This is not all gonna suddenly turn around by the end of the year. This is a beginning to a gradual change folks. Calm down and keep visualizing and manifesting the change.

If we only knew what Illusion is, we would then know the opposite: what Truth is. This Truth would liberate us from slavery.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Noa's picture

Kevin, your words dash my hopes that Americans will awaken in time to reclaim their God-given rights and stop this insane power grab by the Banksters.  The attitude you present helps protect the agenda of the PTB.

Do you still believe in the American dream when 50% of Americans now live below the poverty line?  Do you still think your vote counts after it has been proven that Diebold voting machines are rigged and that government is corrupt?   Do you still believe America is a Democracy when corporations influence politicians and buy votes?

If you still believe that we're living in a free society, I invite you to view the mini-course that Wendy recently posted.  It provides a good overview of the System in a nutshell:  http://www.csper.org/renaissance-20.html

Once you recognize the problem, what can be done about it?   Certainly visualizing a better world is good, but it is also necessary to take physical action in order to change physical reality.  Even Ghandi did more than meditate to implement change.

While the vast majority of sheeple are preoccupied with jobs that haven't kept pace with cost of living increases, a small group of courageous patriots are taking a stand against corruption by acting as more than mere cogs in the wheel of the System.  How many more jobs must be lost, how many people must lose their homes, how many freedoms must we lose, how much of the middle class must disappear before more people wake up to reality?

I don't agree with everything the Occupy Movement is doing, but at least they're doing something!  If nothing else, they are drawing people's attention to what is wrong.

Whether gradual or sudden, things are likely to get worse before they get better.  Sadly, it's probably going to take more shit on the wall for people to wake up and see it.  Otherwise, we could now say "enough is enough," stop complying with this BS, and create a new way of being that supports all life on earth.

"One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake... Every society has its protectors of the status quo and its fraternities of the indifferent who are notorious for sleeping through revolutions.  But today our very survival depends upon our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change."

reality

Drawing attention to what is wrong? We have not even scratched the surface! We are scheduled for extinction by the end of this century! At least, that is the plan, as many of us are aware. And all because of their terror of us! We stand in the way of their implementation of insanity, which is total control and domination of this planet and all of its resources, and the replacement of most if not all human life with slaves and or synthetic life forms, one inch at a time. Obama is the most recent version of leadership into darkness. He is not the first, and he will not be the last. He hates America and all that it stands for and is determined to destroy it and us, along with the help of Israel, Russia and China. He will destroy our military and allow a nuclear strike against us to be used as another false flag operation to justify the march into FEMA camps, martial law, the end of elections (as if they mattered), the total collapse of our nation, allowing him to rule as long as he likes. The plan is for Israel to be the most influential  nation in the world along with their Zionist beliefs. We already answer to their demands! The OWS movement will never succeed until the focus is on what is really behind Wall Street! ZIONISM! Read "Behold a Pale Horse" by William Cooper if you have not already done so and then refocus. Israel and the zionists were very much involved in 9/11, actually dancing in the streets after it happened. The Bush family is linked firmly with zionism, as is Osambo. Time is running out. We have to get away from our keyboards and take to the streets, go into their dens, grab them by their necks, haul them out into the sunlight and watch their faces as they stare at the hangman's noose. We have every right and necessity to fight by any means at our disposal. We are in reality fighting for our lives and we must defend ourselves! In the end, we will win; otherwise, we have already lost. Time for complaining is over! Time for action is upon us and all of humanity! This is all my opinion, of course. Do you have a better one?

neck grabbing

Brian's picture

I don't feel that hauling people into the streets and lynching them would make my world a better place-that isn't to say it shouldn't happen-I just won't likely be doing it with my bare hands. I was taught to abhor violence and I'm a chicken-but I think non-violence is appropriate to the moment. It stirs peoples souls when they witness brave protesters being attacked. It enrages fearful individuals and stirs them to action.  The cop nonchalantly macing protesters really got to a lot of folks-my 3 kids included. People want to feel they are on the right side morally...
